Overview
Manufactured in the UK, DS6 is Eaton's answer to the demands for a small sized cost effective soft starter that performs well when controlling the acceleration and deceleration of three-phase motors. The DS6 is the smallest soft starter controller in its performance class and is the perfect option for upgrading existing systems that may currently be using wye-delta, autotransformers, or across-the-line NEMA and IEC starters.
The DS6 is a two phase control soft starter utilized to accomplish motor starting using the reduced voltage method. The most commonly used form of soft starter mode allows you to set the initial voltage value and duration of the ramp to full voltage conditions. The soft starter also allows for a controlled stopping of a load, or when a stop-time is greater than the coast-to-stop time is desired, or with high friction loads when a sudden stop may cause system or product damage. Installation of the DS6 is made simple with the keyhole mounts and can be done without any special tools.
Key features of the DS6:
- Smallest soft starter controller in its performance class
- Bypass Mode
- Variable Ramp Times/Voltage Control
- Bypass Contactor
DS6-34DSX134N0-N-480V DS6 Features
1. DS6-34DSX134N0-N-480V Acceleration and Deceleration
Voltage ramp start provides a voltage ramp to the motor, resulting in a constant torque increase. Changing the initial voltage value and duration lets it ramp to full voltage conditions. Bypass contactor(s) close after ramp time has elapsed:
- Adjusting initial voltage: 30 - 92% of full voltage
- Adjusting ramp time: 1 - 30 seconds
Soft stop allows for a controlled stopping of a load. It's used when a stop-time that is grated than the coast-to-stop time is desired, or when high friction loads may cause system or product damage. Setting the soft stop time to a value of 0 turns off this feature.
- Soft stop time: 0 - 30 seconds
2. DS6-34DSX134N0-N-480V Bypass Contactor
The internal run bypass contactor closes, resulting in the motor running directly across-the-line. The internally run bypass contactor significantly reduce the heat generated as compared to non-bypass starters, thereby reducing enclosures sizes and cooling requirements and maximizing the life of all the devices in the enclosures.

7. Application Features
- Bypass Mode
- Reduces internal heating created by the power dissipation across the SCRs - the bypass contactor directly connects the motor to the line and improves system efficiency by reducing internal power losses
- LED Display
- Displays device status and provides fault indication
- Variable Ramp Times and Voltage Control
- Provide unlimited starting configurations, allowing for maximum application flexibility
- Auxiliary Relays
- TOR Relay
- Closes when the TOR is achieved (internal bypass relays close)
- RUN Relay
- Closes when the RUN signal is initiated and opens when RUN signal is removed. It remains closed during stop ramp time, if set to a value greater than 0. The RUN relay will also open if a fault occurs.
- Heat Sink
- High ambient temperatures, extended ramp times, and high duty cycle conditions may cause the DS6 to exceed its thermal rating. When temperature goes under -5°C, unit will trip as well. The DS6 is equipped with sensors that monitor the temperature of the device. The soft starter will trip in over/under temperature conditions, preventing device failure.
- Bypass Relay
- The DS6 can detect if the bypass relay fails to close after the ramp start or opens while the motor is running. The DS6 will trip on a bypass dropout fault if either of these conditions occur. The device does not start when bypass relay is closed and start signal is applied.
8. Maintenance & Diagnostics
- Faults
- In the event of a motor stop due to a trip condition by the soft start controller, the FAULT status LED will be illuminated (flashing). In this case, one or more conditions have have occurred. Use standard troubleshooting techniques to determine the cause of the trip, the DS6 does not provide any specific method of identifying the cause of the trip.
