Overview
TCI V1K series are output filters designed to protect motors and cables, specifically with lead lengths between 100 ft to 1000 ft. The filter helps to prevent motor insulation breakdown, which eventually leads to the breakdown of the motor itself.
The basic principles of the V1K series filters are to limit voltage spikes that occur from the mismatched impedance. When the impedance of the motor differs from the value of the variable frequency drives, part of the voltage will be reflected back onto the cable.
Installing a V1K series output filter prevents the voltage from stacking up. Without the filter, it is possible for spikes up to 2,100 V on a 480 V system. The filter is designed to clamp the voltage to prevent the spike from exceeding 1,000 V.
When installed according to the TCI’s guideline, the TCI V1K series is guaranteed to limit voltage spikes of up to 150% of the bus voltage within 1,000 feet and a carrier frequency of 4 kHz.
V1K series filters are the result of combining a patented dampening circuit with a low pass filter. The result enables the V1K filter to increase voltage rise time and prevent sudden pike in voltage transition.
Besides putting a limit on voltage spikes, the V1K series also function to reduce common-mode current by at least 30%. Common mode current is the culprit of problems like bearing pitting and bearing fluting. Installing V1K output filters prolong the lifespan of the bearings.

- Prevents motor failure with protection against motor insulation breakdown.
- Reduces Common Mode by a minimum of 30%.
- Improves system productivity by increasing motor bearing life
- 240 - 600 VAC system compatibility
- 2 - 750 Amps range
- Heavy Duty model available for higher carrier frequency (6 kHz)
MSD0012A000 V1K Series Features
1. MSD0012A000 V1K Series Grounding
To ensure that the filter functions as specified, the V1K filter must be connected to earth ground. A ground point near to the installation must be identified and a connection between the filter and the earth ground is made with a wire conductor.
2. MSD0012A000 Multiple Motor Applications
It is possible for multiple motors to be connected to a single V1K series filter provided that certain guidelines are followed:
- The number of motors is limited to 10.
- The V1K filter must be installed within 10 ft of the VFD.
- The VFD’s carrier frequency is set to 4Khz or below and the operating frequency is 60 Hz and below.
- Connect the VFD output leads to the A1, B1, and C1 terminations of the V1k unit. A2, B2, and C2 service the wire to the motor.
- The length of each motor lead should be less than 500 feet and the sum total of all the leads should be less than 1,500 feet.
- Ensure sufficient ventilation for the filter.
