Overview
The AD Series digital smart phase converters offer a solution for single phase to three phase conversion. It has been reliably built to be used for any types of equipment. The phase converter is best suited for applications like CNC, VFD and any voltage sensitive equipment.
The AD Series features brilliant engineering design by American Rotary, as it produced the voltage balance and true sinusoidal three-phase AC that is demanded by industrial equipment. The converters are designed and tested to meet standards like UL, CSA & NEMA.
System integrators will find flexibility a major advantage offered by the AD Series. The digital smart phase converters can drive a broad range of loads, including resistive, inductive, multiple motors in various combinations.
As inrush current, has always been an issue with phase converters, American Rotary has collaborated with Baldor Electric to develop a custom induction generator, which reduced the inrush current by a remarkable 83%.
AD Series phase converters are available in both floor units and wall units. They are engineered to facilitate installation. The starter is built into the converter to make installation easier. Technicians will also find it easier to perform cabling connections with the available terminal blocks.
Modularity and flexibility are welcomed features with the AD Series phase converters. Multiple units can be daisy chained to produce increased power to the equipment while maintaining phase synchronization.
Key features of AD Series phase converters:
- Current limiting soft starting idler / generator made exclusively by Baldor
- Built-in starter with power guard restart protection
- Virtually zero harmonic content
- Industrial Control Circuit-the single phase power remains on even when the rotary phase converter is in the off position, allowing you to activate any single phase control circuits, DRO’s or other single phase features on your three phase equipment
- Balanced voltages for voltage sensitive equipment
- Convenient terminal blocks for easy connections
- Separate control panel and Idler / generator for optimum space saving installation
- Built in power factor correction
- Loads can be located a large distance from the converter.
- American Rotary rotary phase converters can run any type of load, resistive, inductive, multiple motor, and in any combination and or number.

AD Series Key Features
1. Gentec VIT™ Generator
The AD Series phase converters are equipped with American ROtary’s VIT™ generator. It boasts a proprietary technology that starts the idler generator with ⅓ of starting current compared to conventional phase converters. The generator also stabilizes power factor and phase angle to provide undistorted and stable voltage.
2. Built In Magnetic Starter
The built-in magnetic starter allows the AD series phase converter to be controlled remotely and from multiple locations. The magnetic starters are built to operate with the most difficult loads. They have no problems in handling both starting current and continuous load in a rugged environment.
3. MicroSmart™ Controller
The AD Series phase converters feature the MicroSmart™ Controller which delivers precision control. The MicroSmart™ Controller added intelligence that includes monitoring the voltage in a 50-millisecond interval, increasing the lifespan of the converter and increases load handling capacity.
4. CTR Current Control
The CTR current control is a stabilizer that protects the phase converter from loads that induce a high current spike during startup. It enables the converter to generate more torque while maintaining the same voltage and power. As it allows efficient start-up, equipment’s lifespan is prolonged as well.
Other AD Series Features
1. Physical Installation Environment Considerations
The unit should be installed in a location free from the following:
- Dirt
- Corrosive gases or liquids
- Excessive vibration
- Airborne particles (particularly metal particles)
- Ambient temperatures exceeding 50 degrees C
- High humidity
2. General Wiring Considerations
- Follow all local, state and national electric codes (NEC) which may supersede
- American Rotary recommendations.
- T3 is the manufactured line; DO NOT use T3 for any single phase loads
- Protect all wire and machinery with proper size breakers
- Always make sure rotary phase converter starts before external load(s) are applied.
- A qualified electrician should do all wiring
- DO NOT assume that a breaker box neutral is a ground! Be sure to ground all equipment including breaker boxes, phase converter control panel & Idler, disconnect switches, transformers, loads etc.
- Run all control voltage and equipment controls from lines L1/T1 and L2/ T2. Terminals A and B are for the idler only.
- To minimize voltage drop, American Rotary recommends increasing wire size one size for every 50 feet of run and rounding up
3. Measuring Voltages
Measuring voltage is the easiest way to test to see if the phase converter is working properly. When voltages are balanced on the three 3 -phase lines, currents are balanced.
- Measure L1 to L2 : This is your single phase voltage as supplied from the utility. To get the (T1 to T2 ) most accurate voltage measurements, make sure that the converter is on and the load is applied.
- Measure L1/T1 to T3 : This is the voltage between the manufactured line (T3) and one of the single phase lines. This voltage should be up to 5% higher than the T1 to T2 single-phase voltage.
- Measure L2/T2 to T3 : This voltage is the least important. It should also be within 5%. This voltage will drop when a load is applied.
