AC Electric Motor Stator Winding Repair

Precision Electric has more than 100 years of AC electric motor winding experience. Making AC Electric Motor Coil Connections

Once a AC electric motor has entered our repair facility due to a possible failed winding and it has been through the initial testing process, we will disassemble the motor and begin the AC electric motor stator winding investigation. The first sign of a failed motor winding is the very recognizable odor from a burned up winding. If the odor doesn’t get our attention a full analysis of the motor stator will. The failed area of the AC electric motor stator is then looked at further and a root cause failure report is completed. We will then start taking all nameplate and stator winding information and fill out a EASA Data Card.

The EASA Data Card will give the AC Electric Motor Stator Winding Tech the following information:

  • Nameplate Data
  • Coil and stator core dimensions
  • Connection type
  • Number of circuits used
  • Coil pitch
  • Coil grouping type (salient-pole, consequent-pole)
  • Wire size
  • Number of wires in multiple that make up coils
  • Number of turns of magnet wire in each coil

Once all the required data is recorded, we can begin the actual AC electric motor stator winding process. The proper wire size is pulled from our stock and placed on our winding machine. The coils are then turned and placed on a clean winding rack. In the meantime, the AC electric motor stator is stripped of all the old winding and placed in burn down oven to remove all of the old insulation. After going though a full cycle in the burn down oven the stator is then sandblasted and all lamination and stator teeth are repaired and freed of all sharp edges or areas that could, over time, wear though the insulation and damage the coils causing a premature failure. When the AC electric motor stator is prepped and ready, it goes to our winding department and the new coils are installed according to the EASA winding data card. When all of the coil connections are made and tested, the AC electric motor stator is ready to be dipped in varnish and baked in the oven.

The AC electric motor is then reassembled with new bearings and any lip seals or mechanical seals are also replaced. The motor is then tested at our test panel and all performance data is verified. We then ship and the motor to our customer. If an installation service is required, we schedule a Field Tech to install the AC electric motor at the customer’s site.

Lenze AC Tech Price Increase

Lenze AC Tech announced a price increase a couple weeks ago for nearly all of their drive and servo products except for the SMVector drive lines and newer automation product lines. The Lenze AC Tech price increase will go into effect on May 1, 2012.

Lenze AC Tech stated that the price increase is due to market conditions and significant increases in energy and product material costs (raw materials). We at Precision Electric do not believe the Lenze AC Tech price increase will affect drive sales much, but it may give existing MC Series drive users motivation to convert to Lenze AC Tech SMVector drive line.

The Lenze AC Tech price increase will certainly affect users with existing AC Tech equipment who are not interested in converting over to Lenze AC Tech SMVector drives, or other newer product lines unaffected by the Lenze AC Tech price increase. There are literally thousands of applications out there using the MC Series drives, and in my opinion these applications should be converted over to the Lenze AC Tech SMVector drive line.

Preventing Electrical Bearing Damage Caused by VFD’s

 

FACT: Every motor controlled by a variable frequency drive (VFD) should have bearing protection.

WHY?: Variable frequency drives induce voltage to the electric motor’s shaft that discharges through the bearings. This voltage can cause severe pitting, excessive bearing noise and eventually bearing failure (see picture below).

IT GETS WORSE: Not only the motor’s bearings are at risk but coupled equipment like gear boxes, encoders, brake motors, etc. are also at risk of damage. Installing a bearing protection ring on your electric motor will channel that shaft voltage away from your bearings and safely into ground.
