Precision Electric has many customers who are in the food processing and manufacturing industry. We offer unique solutions to customers who need stainless steel variable frequency drives and stainless steel AC electric motors. We have been offering several different product solutions for these type of applications for years.

Typically when a customer needs a stainless steel variable frequency drive, we offer AC Tech MC series products or Leeson MC series products. AC Tech also has Nema 4x drives which are not stainless steel, but these products do meet Nema 4x requirements.

Some of the more popular electric motor products we offer for the food processing industry include Leeson Electric stainless motors, Connex Gator stainless motors, and Elektrim stainless motors.

Generally when a customer is seeking a quick and low budget solution for an AC stainless steel electric motor, we recommend using Connex stainless motors. If you have an expensive stainless steel motor fail, and your budget doesn’t fit the cost on an identical replacement, we may have an alternative product available to meet your budget.

DC Electric Motor Repair Services

We’ve Been Servicing the Industrial World Since 1983.

Minimize Your Downtime. Maximize Your Productivity.

Call Toll Free: 1.877.625.2402

Precision Electric has hundreds of years combined experience in DC electric motor repair, including armature and field frame rewinds. We service a wide variety of industrial customers and also provide services to other motor repair centers across the midwest.

DC motors introduce additional complexities into the repair process. The addition of a commutator with brushes, and rotating armature coils subjected to centrifugal force, which aren’t factors involved in typical AC electric motor repair.

The following procedures and tests are used at Precision Electric to ensure top-quality DC machine repair:

  • Conductive carbon dust left by worn brushes is cleaned from the armature; then each commutator is checked for grounds and bar-to-bar shorts with detailed electrical testing.
  • Technicians repair most commutator problems in-house. For severely damaged or non-repairable commutators, we outsource for fast delivery of custom manufactured replacements.

  • Coils are manufactured in-house to assure proper fit. This eliminates constant bending and shaping during installation which can damage coil insulation.
  • Proper banding is critical in DC repair. This ensures that windings are held in position during high-speed operation.
  • Field coils are checked using voltage drop testing. Bad fields and interpoles are rewound in our shop on custom forms.

  • TIG welding is available to eliminate soldered joints where design dictates.
  • All commutators at Precision Electric are turned, undercut, and chamfered to provide the best possible surface for brush contact.
  • For corrosive or other severe duty environments, commutator platinum plating is available to extend wear life (pickle-duty).
  • Neutral setting adjustments are made during final machine testing to insure proper operation.

The Precision Electric in-service warranty is another advantage we have over our competitors. We encourage customers to have all spares rebuilt and ready for immediate replacement; this is to ensure maximum production with little to no downtime. Our in-service warranty begins the same day our customers install equipment rebuilt by Precision Electric, and ends 12 months later.

Replacing DC motor with AC motor and AC VFD

Customers of Precision Electric who operate DC drives and motors often inquire about replacing and upgrading their DC equipment with AC equipment. To help users faced with this dilemma, I have decided to post about the topic.

Of course, the main advantages of DC drives are that they cost less, produce less heat, have smaller footprints and are easier to fix in the field. They also can perform high torque at low speed and handle high-impact loads. However, the main knocks against DC drives are that the motor costs more and requires some maintenance, and they need a field supply, which adds complexity.

DC drive systems also require accessory equipment, such as inductors, contactors and fusing, and many users are increasingly unfamiliar with DC technology.

Meanwhile, the advantages of AC drives are that they’re used with AC induction motors, so there are no brushes to maintain, and the price of an AC drive system, including the motor, is more cost-effective than a DC drive. AC drives also have better power factors, are easy to install and start up, are available from multiple vendors and can run motors efficiently across the whole speed range.

However, the disadvantage of AC is that the drive is fundamentally more complex, involving volts and amps and hertz. Also, line regeneration is possible, but expensive, and brake choppers are sometimes necessary, but they waste energy and give off heat.

Despite these many differences, there are some areas where DC and AC drives come to a tie. They also have comparable drive features, ease of commissioning when looking at state-of-the-art DC drives, as well as reliability and maintenance of the drive.

Precision Electric recommends that users replace their existing equipment with an AC system when:

  • The existing DC motor is near its end of life,
  • Power factor and distortion are an issue, such as when the DC motor has a poor power factor when running below base speed, or when you’re paying a penalty or need to add a power factor correction, or when there’s an IEEE 519 requirement;
  • The motor is small, perhaps less than 200 hp, so the money difference becomes insignificant given the many benefits that will be gained with an AC system; and
  • The machine can be out of service for a longer period of time.

Users should upgrade their DC drives when:

  • You want to save money, as when the DC drive replacement costs less than AC system replacement throughout the HP range;
  • The existing DC motor is in decent shape, and spares are readily available;
  • Your situation requires fast upgrade with minimal downtime.

Users also should consider a DC drive or system replacement for large motors, especially above 1,000 hp or above 690 volts; if they have a large regenerative load; or if their DC motor is not easily replaceable with an AC motor. This may be because of differing shaft height and shaft diameter, difficult position or hard-to-reach components, or if they their application has special cooling needs.

If you are considering replacing your DC equipment with AC equipment and are unsure about your decision, call or email us. Precision Electric has been serving the industrial manufacturing world for over 25 years and has over 100 years of combined experience in the field.

SMVector Pumps Hard-to-Handle Chemicals

Flomotion Systems develops and manufactures unique sealless peristaltic pumps that eliminate loss-of prime failures in chemical feed applications. Typical markets served include water & wastewater treatment, chemical, food & dairy, pharmaceutical, pulp & paper, energy management, power and irrigation.

A long-time user of Lenze – AC Tech’s MC Series drives; Flomotion has now incorporated the economical, compact and lightweight SMVector drive in the design of their 2001HEC Series pumps.

The Flomotion 2001HEC Series are rugged, reliable and cost effective industrial hose pumps built to succeed in harsh industrial environments. Several features of the SMVector make it a perfect fit for the job, including a removable terminal cover; easy access for control and power wiring and the fact that it can handle a wide range of operating temperatures from -10 to 55ºC. Last but not least, according to Flomotion, the SMVector offers better protection against electrical shock than any other NEMA 1 controller on the market.

Mounting the SMVector controller directly to the pump allows Flomotion to optimize precious panel space and offer its customers outstanding convenience. The unique EPM or Electronic Programmable Module stores the drive’s parameter configuration greatly simplifying initial setup.

Centrifugal and pumping applications especially those moving fluids or a mixture of wet and dry ingredients present a challenge because the speed is affected by the load. Fluid moving applications require ‘variable speed’ – a drive and motor that can produce the necessary horsepower to move the load at a constant speed. The motor will draw from the drive the amount.

of current it needs to ‘do the job’. The SMVector drive works well in this type of application because the speed can be controlled tightly in vector mode (more torque/less speed) or loosely in V/Hz mode to determine just the right amount of speed.

SMVector Benefits

• Multiple enclosure options available including washdown
• Wide temperature range: -10 to 55ºC
• Removable memory (EPM)
• Multiple operational modes (V/Hz, Enhanced V/Hz, Open Loop Vector)
• Lightweight, compact design
• Intuitive programming
• Multiple communication options
• Economical

Electrocraft Reliance Allen Bradley H Series Servo Motor Repair

We’ve Been Servicing the Industrial World Since 1983.
Minimize Your Downtime. Maximize Your Productivity.

Call Toll Free: 1.877.625.2402

Electrocraft/Reliance/Allen Bradley H series servo motors frequent our repair technicians here at Precision Electric. Over the years we have repaired hundreds of H series servo motors.

The H series servo motors have been around for a long time, and are obsolete. Since the H series servo motors have become obsolete, we highly recommend customers using this equipment to use Preventitive Maintenance plans with Precision Electric. This is to lessen the chance for an H series servo motor to become damaged beyond economical repair.

The H series servo motors are used with Electrocraft 2000 series amplifiers, Allen Bradley Ultra Plus amplifiers, as well as other products manufactured by Allen Bradley, Electrocraft, and Reliance.

The H series servo motor generally needs to be serviced more often than the servo amplifiers that run them. However, Precision Electric also sees H series servo drives/amplifiers in for repair as well. Our service technicians at Precision Electric keep large stock of parts for these products to speed up repair processes, and decrease cost for both Precision Electric and their customers.

Lenze AC Tech SMV with Speed Potentiometer

The Lenze-AC Tech SMV drive now has an option speed potentiometer option and is built right into the terminal cover, providing direct front panel access. Steve Dextraze, Inverter Product Manager at Lenze-AC Tech, calls it robust and easy to maneuver and states that the potentiometer knob takes the place of the up/down buttons on the drive keypad, giving the operator manual speed control over a 0-10V analog output.

“The potentiometer option is great for use in hands-on applications where speed must be ramped up/down, such as conveyer applications or food/beverage process applications.” says Dextraze, adding, “In single use installations the potentiometer provides just the right amount of control without the user having to use the keypad.”

The SMVector inverter drive provides all the features required by demanding applications, including four modes of operation – V/Hz, Enhanced V/Hz, Vector Speed, and Torque – plus high starting torque, auto-tuning, advanced low-speed control and dynamic speed regulation.

The SMVector is designed to be truly a global product, with an input voltage ranging from 120VAC 1-phase to 600 VAC, 3-phase, plus the Electronic Programming Module or EPM, a removable chip that is the drive’s memory and allows a customer to program multiple drives in just seconds; the SMVector NEMA 4X also offers an integral disconnect option for quick and easy motor maintenance.

Lenze-AC Tech’s portfolio of AC Drive products extends from some of the world’s smallest sub-micro drives up through large, 500 HP.

Precision Electric has an excellent relationship with Lenze-AC Tech, as we have been working with them for over 15 years. Precision Electric is one of Lenze-AC Tech’s preferred authorized repair facilities and distributors in North America.
