There are four major categories of encoder which are differentiated by the demands of the operating environment. These run from heavy duty (the most demanding environment) to light duty (the most controlled environment).

Heavy, Servo, and Industrial Encoder Grades
Heavy industrial applications have three classes of encoder:

  • Heavy
  • Industrial
  • Servo

As the name implies, heavy duty encoders can take the most abuse. They have excellent durability in high temperatures; with particulates, moisture, and contaminants; and under shock or vibration. They have superior speed performance, as well. Heavy duty encoders are the best choice for the most demanding environments – paper, steel, and ore mills where contamination is constant and both shock and heat affect the motor, the stress of aerospace, and the fast factory environments of food and beverage processing. However, heavy duty encoders come at a cost of both size and expense. Unless the environment is truly brutal, a heavy duty encoder may be overkill.

The most common class of encoders is the industrial encoder. An industrial encoder can take punishing operating environments almost as well as heavy duty encoders – rough factories with contamination from dust, particulates, and moisture, in addition to moderate shock and temperature. An industrial encoder offers excellent speed and positioning performance. The class of industrial encoders is versatile.

Servo encoders, unlike both heavy duty and industrial encoders, actually reside inside a motor housing. Because it is in a contained environment, it doesn’t have strong sealing, but it has excellent temperature resistance and reliable shock/vibration resistance (which fits its operating environment). Because of its location, server encoders are smaller and are made for small to mid-sized motors, especially servo and stepper motors.

Light (or Commercial) Encoder Grade
Light duty encoders are used in more consumer-facing applications like office electronics (copiers, faxes, and computer accessories) and laboratory and medical equipment. These have “people-friendly” environments, meaning conditions are very controlled. Likewise, light duty encoders have good (but not demanding) performance for temperature, shock/vibration, and sealing, with better speed performance and high precision.

What Is The Default Password For An AC Tech SMVector VFD?

All AC Tech SMVector drives come equipped with a default password to protect the drive from operators changing parameters without the programmers consent. Although this process can be confusing the first time you open your AC Tech SMVector VFD, or Variable Frequency Drive, it is easy to do once you’ve done it once.

Password protection is becoming more and more prominent in the world of Variable Frequency Drives and the SMVector illustrates this process right out of the box. The purpose of protection is to keep the program within the drive protected from outside modifications or to allow OEMs to protect their proprietary configurations when selling a machine.

Many customers also opt to purchase a EPM module for their SMVector drive to keep their configuration files backed up to a separate module, just in case of a drive failure or EPM program failure. Whatever the reason for accessing the parameters, the process of accessing the parameter menu is extremely easy.

The AC Tech parameter menu can be deceptive when one first uses the drive. To access the parameter menu of an AC Tech SMVector drive they must first enter the default password that is included with the unit when it is shipped. Many customers call us with this issue if they’ve never used an AC Tech SMVector drive before.

The parameter menu allows users to access any of the parameters available in the AC Tech SMVector drive and modify them as they wish. It is important to note that the user should make sure to check the SMVector users manual to check whether or not the parameter they wish to modify can be modified without stopping the drive first.

There are also a few parameters in the parameter menu that will require a system reboot prior to the parameter change taking place. This information is also available in the SMVector manual in the parameters section. No matter your reason for changing the parameters, the AC Tech SMVector parameter menu is incredibly easy to access.

How To Wire 120 Volt Input To An SMVector VFD Drive

The SMVector series of drives supports input voltages up to 600 volts. Although these voltages are pretty much the standard in the US, many people do not realize the differences in wiring between single phase and three phase. One of the slightly deceptive configurations in the 120 Volt SMVector drive is that it shows and L1 and L2 input but the hot wires are actually only wired to L1 and N.

Wiring the SMVector series drive is a simple enough process, but the proper safety precautions should always be taken to ensure injury or death do not occur. For this reason, it is ultimately the responsibility of the one performing to work to take the proper precautions as designated by their local safety laws and regulations.

This article illustrates how to wire an SMVector series drive for 120 volts main supply input. It also illustrates how to determine what voltage the SMVector drive is rated for.

Note: This tutorial and task should only be performed by a qualified drives specialist.

How To Wire 120 Volt Input To An SMVector VFD Drive:

Before You Begin: Make sure the drive’s input voltage rating is rated for 120 Volts AC by looking at the drives nameplate (the demonstration image below shows input voltage of 400/480 V 3 phase).

Note: 240 Volt Drives can be powered with 120 Volts but the wiring will be different and the drive must be derated for the application. Contact us for more details.

Before You Begin - Make Sure The Drives Input Voltage Is 120 Volts (or 240 Volts if you are Derating the drive)

1. Make sure the mains power supply you will be wiring has been completely shut off and locked out.

2. Note the manuals wiring diagram for wiring 120 Volt single power phase to an SMVector drive. To protect your drive, it is recommended that you properly fuse the hot line coming into your L1 input.

Mains Connection to 120 VAC Single-Phase Supply

3. Wire the 120 Volts hot wire to the L1 input.

Step 2 - Wire 120 Volts Hot Line To L1

4. Wire the 120 Volts common wire to the N, or neutral, input.

Step 3 - Wire 120 Volts Common to N (or Neutral)

5. Wire the 120 Volts ground to the PE, or ground, input.

6. Apply power to the drive. You should be greeted with the following display on the keypad.
